Treatment of Trichomoniasis with a single Dose of 2gm Tinidazole ( Fasigyn )

Abstract

|
Thirty patients in whom the diagnosis of trichomonal vaginitis were confirmed by direct microscopic examination of the vaginal secretion diluted in an isotonic saline solution. The husbands or sexual partners were also treated with the same dose of tinidazole at the same time. The results of a single dose treatment with 2 gm tinidazole in 30 patients with vaginal trichomoniasis infection were reported as follows; 1) In 29 patients out of 30(96.7%) the trichomonads were completely eradicated after the single dose treatment on one week follow-up visit after tinidazole therapy. In one patient, a second course of therapy led to complete eradication of trichomonads. There were 2 patients out of 30 (93.3%) who had trichomonads at the 4 to 6 week follow-up visit. It could not be determined whether this was due to a treatment failure or to reinfection. 2) Minor side effects such as anorexia, nausea, abdominal discomfort, vertigo and dark urine developed in 8 cases(26.7%). 3) Biologic toleration by hemogram and liver function tests performed before and after the treatment was found to be very good. The advantages of a single dose treatment of both partners were salf-evident.
